Portuguese version of Mickey Leigh’s I SLEPT WITH JOEY RAMONE coming to Brazil on November 4th

October 28th, 2013 | By vibethink

Don’t let the title fool you. This book is not about sleeping. It’s about awakening.Mickey Leigh labored for six years writing this utterly compelling story of him and his older brother’s lives – including the amazing journey that led to the genesis of legendary Joey Ramone. The result is a book titled: I Slept with Joey Ramone, which will be released in Portuguese on November 4th, 2013 as Eu dormi com Joey Ramone: memórias de uma família punk rock.Vividly portraying his brothers band’s career from inception to final performance, the story focuses on the relationship between two brothers and family dynamics. That aspect of the book makes it equally appealing to fans of the Ramones as well as those completely unfamiliar with them. With Legs McNeil, co-founder of PUNK magazine dipping into his treasure chest of rare interview material, we added key quotes that widely balance the perspective of many rather than just one or two.Praised by the press and cherished not only by Ramones fans, but by lovers of truly inspirational stories in the US, Finland and France where the book has already been published, Brazilians will finally be able to behold this endearingly realistic portrait of the man who struggled to find his voice, and of the brother who loved and encouraged him…from the beginning. The release of the book will be followed by four book signings by Mickey in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre and Caxias do Sul.

resto, mi querido y viejo amigo. Rest, my dear old friend. He was there, almost from the very beginning, in 1974, creating unique images for the band with a precise understanding of their concept. Giving them everything he had to give, including lodging in his home. He was the first person to join me in helping the Ramones get on the road, when they couldn’t afford to pay anyone.. We loaded, and unloaded their equipment together- then I worked the stage, and he worked the stage-lights. We crunched ourselves into crevices in the van between guitar and road cases, trying to catch some sleep on those long rides. If we were lucky we got to share a bed. That was in the beginning. I left, and he went on to do so much for that band. NO ONE in that organization took better care of my brother– and he continued to do so, until the end. I’m devestated at his loss.

Mickey’s Homemade Video for “See My Way”

November 11th, 2011 | By admin

From the YouTube notes:

“Home made video, by me, Mickey Leigh. My brother, Joey, had been seeing me cover this song since the late 80′s, He loved the shorter arrangement, the guitar solos, the harmonies, the energy, …all of it. One day he told me he was going to do it with the Ramones…and then he laughed. In 1994 Joey suggested he and I record it together.”

This video includes some great family photos that Mickey has diligently archived, as well drawings done by Joey himself, which Mickey found in Joey’s apt. This song is one that Mickey had been doing with his band years prior to Joey suggesting they record it together. Joey loved Mickey’s guitar playing, and prefered his shortened, energized arrangement of the song as opposed to the original written and recorded in the early 70′s by a band called Blodwyn Pig, which they both loved.

2011 Joey Ramone Birthday Bash

May 11th, 2011 | By admin

2011 JOEY RAMONE BIRTHDAY BASH DETAILS UNVEILED;
10 YEARS AFTER HIS PASSING, THE PUNK-ROCK LEGEND LIVES ON

New York, NY: On what would have been his 60th birthday, the life of punk icon JOEY RAMONE will once again be celebrated at the annual JOEY RAMONE BIRTHDAY BASH which takes place Wednesday, May 19th at The Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza. Mickey Leigh, event organizer and brother of Joey Ramone, has announced this year’s lineup and a sellout Bash is expected again. Net proceeds will go to benefit Lymphoma research.

This year’s Bash is the 11th annual event commemorating the life and music of the Ramones vocalist and main songwriter.  Reflecting on the past decade, Leigh remarked: “You would think it the other way around, and normally it is, but the contributions my brother made seem to be of greater and greater value as the years go on.  Even just the fact that his life is still being celebrated ten years after his passing is worth celebrating. Of course, at the same time some of us will also be celebrating the life of Jeffry Hyman, the guy I grew up with, and still look up to as someone who so dramatically overcame tremendous adversity in order to achieve what he did. That person was not ‘Joey Ramone,’ but was certainly someone most deserving of celebration as well.”

The celebration will be headlined by Hugh Cornwell (ex Stranglers) featuring Clem Burke (Blondie) and Steven Fishman (James White and the Blacks). Also performing at the Bash will be Black 47, Richard Lloyd, The Rattlers, Sunday Masquerade, and The Indecent. As a special addition, this year’s spectacular party will feature a tribute to Joey performed by the “Joey Ramone Birthday Bashers” who will debut songs from Joey’s much anticipated forthcoming, second posthumous solo album. Several special guests will also be offering up renditions of Ramone’s songs written by the band’s much revered and sorely missed lead singer. Confirmed to participate are Richie Ramone, Tommy Ramone, Richie Stotts (Plasmatics), Bebe Buell, Ed Stasium, Andy Shernoff (Dictators), Ali McMordie (Stiff Little Fingers) Al Maddy, Walt Stack (the Bullys), and Mickey Leigh. Surprise guest are a normal occurrence at this event, video tributes from artists all over the world are expected, and in what has become a Birthday Bash tradition, Sean O’Sullivan’s Punk Pipers will round out the night with their rendition of “I Wanna Be Sedated” on bagpipes.

The Masters of Ceremony for this year’s fete will be Steve Craig and Matt Pinfield of 101.9 WRXP radio. Additional surprises are anticipated at the evening’s events.

RAMONE, who passed away April 15th, 2001, after a seven-year battle with Lymphoma, had a history of encouraging up-and-coming bands in New York’s downtown music scene by showcasing them at his special “Joey Ramone Presents” events. Since RAMONE’s passing, his brother has carried on the tradition “by featuring bands that make great music and gathering together some of our family, friends, and Joey’s fans to celebrate him on what would otherwise be a sad, somber day,” Leigh explained.

This year’s Bash is being sponsored by Manic Panic, the Village Voice, New York Waste, 101.9 WRXP and Bravado.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance through Ticketmaster at http://www.ticketmaster.com/The-11th-Annual-Joey-Ramones-Birthday-Bash-tickets/artist/1566855. The Fillmore is located at 17 Irving Place, corner of 15th Street, NYC. Doors open at 7PM.
